An update on Ruth Davies and the London Marathon
Ruth Davies was due to run the London Marathon on 26th April for Vision Aid Overseas. As you will know, it has been postponed so she thought she would still run a local “unofficial marathon”.
This will now take place on Sunday 5th April and she is hopeful that a few work colleagues and friends may stand, suitably socially distanced, on the occasional corner and cheer.
Thank you to those who have already sponsored her and if anyone else felt inclined………… the charity would be very grateful.
She also intends to run the London Marathon on October 4th.
Thank you to everyone for their support for this challenge and also for your understanding and support in the current situation.
2012 Olympic Games
When the opportunity arose to help with the optometry clinic in the Olympic Village at the 2012 Olympic Games, Ruth was one of the first to volunteer. Her experience with Vision Aid Overseas helped her to work with all nationalities during the main Games and the Paralympics.
Avon Local Optical Committee
Nina was a member of this organisation which liaises with the NHS, for a number of years. She was a part of the group that set up the Bristol & Weston Eye Screening Service for diabetic retinopathy. She was also involved with planning the Bristol OHT (Ocular Hypertension) Monitoring and Repeat Measures Service which assists the Bristol Eye Hospital with monitoring cases of glaucoma and refining referrals.
The Henleaze Christmas festival
We were involved with setting up the very first Henleaze Christmas festival in 2007 and Nina has been an enthusiastic member of the organising committee ever since. Every year a touch of Christmas magic descends on Henleaze with a Christmas market, a children’s funfair, Father Christmas and street entertainers. The date for this popular community event in 2020 is Wednesday 2nd December.
The Henleaze Christmas festival prize draw raises money for local charities with prizes generously donated by local businesses and organisations. In 2019 we distributed £2750 to worthwhile causes.

We are always looking for more volunteers to help with the running of the festival! Check the website for more information. www.henleazechristmasfestival.co.uk
